The Victoria Tunnel is a preserved 19th century waggonway built to transport coal from Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river and operated between 1842 and the 1860's. The Tunnel was converted in 1939 into an air raid shelter to protect thousands
of Newcastle citizens during World War 2. The tunnel runs 2.4 Miles and Drops 222ft Underground. This makes a visit here an unnerving prospect for many. A wagonway accident in the 1800's saw the only ever known fatality in the tunnel, however there are a lot more creepy goings on. The last visitors reported it as a "spine tingling successful evening."
